Cage floors
« on: September 29, 2014, 10:05:19 am »

I have used wire floors for 25 years and have had very good results.
Don't use wood floors for rabbits. The wood gets dirty with urine and feces and the rabbits feet get dirty. Also the rabbit will be exposed to disease organisms.

A 1/2 inch x 1 inch mesh is best. 1/2 x 1/2 is not big enough to allow all droppings to fall through. Also the mesh on 1/2 x 1/2 is weaved and makes the floor bumpy for rabbits feet. The 1/2 x 1 is not weaved and allows for a much smoother surface. Always put the 1/2 inch side on top(the side the bunny stands on) for smoother floor surface as well.

If your bunny stays inside make sure they are litter box trained and keep them clean.

We bought a cage that had some wood on one side and wire on the other side.

I will never use wood again!
The bunny's feet were very dirty and the bunny got sick. The vet told us to remove the wood. So after a vet visit and 10 days of antibiotics and yogurt...We got a new all wire cage. Now the bunny is clean and healthy and the cage is cleaned every week.
Don't use wood floors. The bunny cannot stay clean and sits in its own poo and pee! Wire floors allow the bunny to stay clean!
